Newmont Mining Research Lab Inspires Young Scientists!

Thank you to Cindy Williams for arranging a Newmont Mining Research Lab  on Thursday, August 1 at the Newmont Malozemoff Technical Facility at 10101 East Dry Creek, which is just east of I-25 on Dry Creek. Here is a picture of the STEM Ventures students and the scientists, chemists, microbiologists and technicians who work at the Newmont Lab.

Newmont Mining Corporation is one of the world’s largest gold producers with significant assets or operations on five continents and 15 countries, $10 billion in yearly revenue and 43,000 employees and contractors. Focus spans exploration, project development and mining operations.

Cindy and StudentNewmont’s Malezemoff Technical Facility in South Denver is an industry-leading research laboratory for gold metallurgical and geoscience innovation.  The facility employees over 50 scientists, including chemists, geologists, metallurgists and more.  The team is engaged in innovative research and development of gold and copper processing methods, plus cutting-edge technology for water treatment producing clean drinking water for communities across Newmont’s global operations.

This amazing day of learning started at 9 a.m. with our host and former Vice President of Newmont Mining, Cindy Williams  sharing, “Why Students Should Choose a STEM Career.” Cindy is a highly accomplished executive with over 20 years of domestic and international experience with Newmont Mining. At her last assignment with Newmont, Cindy served as the Vice President of Solutions and Innovations, where she managed a half-billion dollar budget and was responsible for the leadership of enterprise-wide Innovation and Global Technical Functions, including mine engineering, resource modeling, geotechnical-hydrologic engineering, metallurgical characterization, laboratory research, process development and energy. Business results delivered strong advances through her leadership of technical services, innovation, exploration, project evaluation and project development, and technical due diligence with complex global scope. Cindy has a Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Geology from Colorado State University with Highest Distinction, where she participated in the University Honors Program.

Here was the complete agenda for the Newmont Tour

Interactive experiential learning in Newmont’s industry-leading gold metallurgical laboratory which includes:

*   Gemini table demonstration – An Interactive Recovery of Gravity Gold

*   Microbiology –  Microscopic organisms used to oxidize geological samples will be displayed on a large screen.

*   Oxidation/Reduction Chemistry – A demonstration of an Iodine Clock

*   Demonstration of Fire Assay for gold

*   Activity demonstrating water treatment.  Students brought a sample of their home water if they want, and they tested water quality before and after treatment by Newmont’s innovative reverse osmosis water purifying system.

*   Mineralogy – Students were given a mineral to identify by Raman spectroscopy and other mineralogy tools.

Students were invited to stay for lunch, a BBQ cookout of brains and hamburgers, with time to interact with Newmont scientists.

Thank you to Estee Medberry, pictured above for sharing at the DCSD Board of Education, on Tuesday, August 6 during Public Comment about the successful Newmont Mining Research Lab.  Estee received rave reviews from teachers, DCSD BOE members, and parents for her crisp, sharp, presentation highlighting the ingenuity and innovation in the Newmont Lab.

The Vision of the Research Labs is to provide the Six R’s: Real World, Relevant, Rigorous, Role Models, Respect and Research Labs.

STEM Ventures Research Labs, projects and programming provide opportunities for students to be exposed to real-world projects and professionals, who provide relevant, rigorous teaching from outstanding role models and business and industry mentors, where respect and other character-based traits are emphasized in an atmosphere of world-class research labs.
